Last Click and Brand Search

How Google harvests the demand Meta created.

I once presented a slide that said "Brand search: 12.4x ROAS, our best channel". A board member asked what would happen to brand search if we stopped all the other ads. I said it would stay the same, because it was our best channel. Two months later I had the data to answer properly, and the answer was: it halved.

The one-sentence version

Brand search collects demand that something else created, and last-click attribution hands it the whole credit. The 12x ROAS is real inside Google's tab. The incremental ROAS is closer to 1.

The setup

The cut that looks free

You cut Meta prospecting because its ROAS is 1.9x. Week one, nothing happens. Week two, nothing. This is the trap: the demand you already created keeps searching for you for a couple of weeks. Then it does not.

Try it: eight weeks

Cut prospecting. Watch brand search.

12x

Brand search ROAS this week: 12.0x

Brand searches hold steady at about 100 orders a week. Someone is still creating the demand that brand search collects.

You can only harvest without planting once. Harvest without planting, twice.

The mechanism

How the credit moves

Tuesday: the reel

Meta shows a prospecting ad to someone who has never heard of you. They watch it twice. No click. Meta cannot claim it.

Friday: the search

They type your brand into Google and click the ad above your organic listing. Google's tag fires at checkout. Google claims it, last click, full credit.

Monday: the report

Brand search ROAS: 12x. Prospecting ROAS: 1.9x. The report is accurate and the conclusion it invites is wrong.

The board member ran a dental chain. He understood "referrals" better than I understood attribution.

The fix

See the whole journey, cap the harvester

Order-verified attribution shows "Meta reel → brand search → order" on the order itself, with dates. Then split credit with a model that knows brand search is the end of the journey, not the beginning. The new-vs-returning split does the rest: a brand campaign with 80% returning customers is a coupon, not an acquisition channel. In TrueROAS both views sit next to each other so you can watch the credit move.

Honest footnote

When brand search really is incremental

If competitors bid aggressively on your name and you have no prospecting at all, brand search protects revenue that would otherwise walk. Measure it with a two-week holdout in a couple of regions before you decide. It takes an afternoon to set up.

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers

Usually not entirely; competitors will bid on it instead. The point is to measure brand search honestly, cap its budget, and stop letting its ROAS decide the prospecting budget.

Journey view: count orders that ended on brand search and started with a Meta touch or a Meta survey answer. Or run the geo test on the incrementality page: pause prospecting in two regions and watch brand search volume there.

Worse. PMax serves on brand terms and Shopping for returning customers by default, then reports it all as PMax revenue. Use brand exclusions and check new-customer share.

High, and it does not matter. The question is what the incremental ROAS is. Often the honest answer is close to 1, because most of those people would have found you anyway.

"I built this because I was making $50k-a-month decisions on numbers I knew were wrong. If TrueROAS does not show you something Meta or Google got wrong in the first two weeks, tell me and I will help you cancel."
